There were many words Kaze would have liked to have been allowed to say when the door slid open, and Lyric stood before him. Poetry about the beauty embodied in her form warred with the guttural articulations of desire from his lesser brain. In the end, he could only stare speechless at the woman before him.

His woman, his heart demanded.

“Is it that bad?” she asked, touching her short curls with delicate fingertips.

“No,” he said, pulling himself together. “It looks lovely. Far better than I left you with.”

The dimples appeared in a shy smile that nearly caused him to drop their dinner.

“Maybe I should set this down,” he said, motioning with the tray. “May I come in?”

She stepped aside to make room in the small space. Only then did he realize how difficult it was going to be to eat anywhere but on the bed with the food between them. He felt his face darkening at the images that brought to mind.

“Um,” he said, looking around for another option. “Perhaps we should go to the dining hall after all. I wasn't thinking about the size of the room when I offered to bring food here.”

“We can set the tray on the folding chair and sit here,” she said, gesturing at the bed. “There should be enough room that way.”

“I don't want you to think...” he said and then cleared his throat before rewording. “I don't want to be inappropriate or give you a reason to feel ill at ease.”

Her eyes did a quick once over his body. Her cheeks reddened, but there was no unease in her gaze. What was she possibly thinking about? “I trust you,” she said, touching his arm. He wanted nothing more than to have that touch last forever. Her fingers curled around his arm as if she could possibly want the same thing. “We've been alone together more than once now. If you were going to make me regret that trust, you would have already. That's one thing I've learned with the life I've had. Monsters don't need more than one opportunity to hurt you.”

“I would never hurt you,” he said, meeting her eyes and hoping she saw the truth of his words.

“I know.”

Her words shocked him, but there was no chance for him to say anything more. She took the tray and placed it on the chair before seating herself on the far side of the bed. He had no choice but to follow suit on the end closest to the door. He'd been in battles for his life and never wanted to run as badly as he did at that moment. Having her so close, with the softness of the mattress beneath them made him fear himself far more than any enemy he had ever come up against.

“Can you tell me about your life?” he asked to force his mind into a direction that didn't revolve around removing the overly-large clothes covering her body. His clothes on his woman. “If you want to, that is.
